We left for Utah Saturday late morning June 30th and drove straight to Mapleton for the Backus family reunion. It was fun to see all of my Mom's family. We had a yummy potluck and just visited in the park. We stayed at the Andelins house in their basement. They have a basement apartment that's not rented right now so it was perfect and so kind of them to let us stay there. We had the opening fireside for the Andersen Family Reunion Sunday evening then drove up to Heber Monday morning to the Heber Valley girls camp and were there until late morning on Tuesday. Eliza was fussier than normal but besides that we had a great time visiting with everyone.
Eliza with her Great Grandma Andersen whose mother's name was Eliza Ann
We went shopping at the outlets in Park City on our way home (well Caleb sat in the car with the kids while they slept while I shopped!) then stopped at Bridal Veil falls.
Wednesday morning Caleb and I ran the Freedom Run 5K and enjoyed that. Caleb's time was 24:04 and mine was 23:33. We're not quite back in last year's shape yet! It's always fun to run that race though. We watched fireworks that night which Samuel really enjoyed. The arctic circle shakes were my favorite part. :) Thursday was Leighton's birthday party, Friday we went swimming at the Sierra and then to Rachel's to celebrate her birthday, and somewhere in there we looked at places to live while we're at school and finally decided on Caleb's parent's basement in Elk Ridge. We're excited about that and I felt relieved to have that decision made.
Fun with Uncle Tim and the Webb cousins
Saturday morning as we were packing up the van to head home Laura brought Sam to us and he was saying he'd put a screw in his ear. We looked in it with a flash light and sure enough you could see it in there. We looked at it better a bit later and figured out it was actually an earring back. We pinned him down and tried to get it out but decided to let him take a nap in the van and try again when we got home. It wasn't bothering him at all. We had a couple neighbors come over and help us hold him down and tried getting it with tweezers. Still couldn't get it out and his ear bled a bit from the tweezers. It was awful for us, and especially Caleb. We called my cousin Brigham who's an orthopedic surgeon in town and asked for his suggestion. He said to try a water pik. So we took Sam over to their house Monday morning and tried that. Still wouldn't budge. So we got in with Dr. Hanks an ENT (Kim Batt watched Eliza for us) and he tried a vacuum but that wouldn't work so he finally just dug it out with a little metal instrument that looked like a mini crochet hook. We were so relieved when it came out. It was no fun pinning Samuel down every time we tried something new. The poor boy barely had a voice left from all the crying. And plus they'd mentioned that if that didn't work they'd have to schedule surgery. Seemed silly to have to do surgery when you could see it! His ear bled quite a bit from the doc having to scrape it out. It was one fat earring back. Anyway hopefully he learned his lesson. Dr. Hanks prescribed some drops for his ear which we had to do 3 times a day for 7 days. We let Sam have his paci whenever we did drops (b/c it was pretty traumatizing still for anyone to come near his ear) so by the third day when he figured out the drops wouldn't hurt he started asking for drops so he could have his paci. :) He still loves that paci even though he only gets it at nap time now. His new thing is to take Eliza's paci (hers is the green one, his the blue) and hide under the kitchen table to suck on it.
Or to reach into Eliza's crib when he wakes up and take her paci! This morning we woke up and he was sitting in our bathroom sink sucking on her paci playing with Caleb's razor. Anyway that was a crazy way to end our vacation but we're glad it all turned out okay.
Since then... we had our annual ward campout the following weekend and got rained on in the middle of the night. Our tent didn't do so well! It was kind of a long night but I just love sleeping outside; I don't regret staying the night at all! Thankfully Eliza stayed dry at least.
Monday we went swimming for our FHE activity. Sam just loves it and is swimming really well on his own with his floaty.
